EU funding has recently been secured as part of the “Smart Coasts = Sustainable Communities” project which will be used to protect Swansea Bay and comply with new EU legislation.
Under new legislation the quality of the bay’s water will need to be predicted so that when short term pollution events, such as heavy rainfall, are forecast, signs and other warnings can be put released to advise against bathing. A prediction model for Swansea Bay is being produced by Aberystwyth University.
Cllr Linda Tyler-Lloyd said “This project is very important to the long term quality of Swansea Bay. Not only will it allow periods of high pollution to be predicted, it will also help provide potential solutions to problems with bathing water that may be faced in the future.”
